Trump is Talking to HimselfLast week, Trump told the press twice in one day that he had spoken to a “certain president…who he like[s], actually” about his decision to bomb Iran in coordination with Israel. That unnamed former president allegedly expressed, “I wish I did it. I wish I did,” and, “I wish I did what you did.” Thing is, aides to the four living former presidents deny having any recent contact with Trump, according to NBC News. Clinton’s team said it wasn’t him. W’s team said, “they haven’t been in touch.” Obama’s aide said, “no recent conversations” have taken place. And a source shared that it wasn’t Biden, either. Is it weird for Trump to lie to the press and the public multiple times in one day? Absolutely not. Is it weird for him to deploy such a blatant lie? Nope. What is weird is that this lonely authoritarian is reduced to conjuring conversations (that I’m sure he wished were real), and using them to validate his killing and military actions abroad. It’s like he’s giving himself a boost to increase his harm, and creating a way to potentially point to someone else to blame for the carnage and the fall out of his actions. I categorize it in the same column with Trump’s demand that the very allied nation that he disrespects and disregards come to his aid to clean up the mess that he and Netanyahu facilitated in the Hormuz Strait. As these nations reject and question Trump’s demand, and effectively tell him to “get somebody else to do it,” he is scrounging for support. So where it doesn’t exist, he makes it up. And as allies refuse to help him, he will likely pivot to blaming them for the ongoing increases in oil prices, and the declining ability to move, and access, products like fertilizer, semiconductors, and more. Just give it another week or so.
