“The fight for Black liberation, and the liberation for all people, will not stop no matter [the] oppression, intimidation, manipulation tactics,” Nee Nee Taylor, Co-founder of the Free DC Project and Executive Director of Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, declared to cheers during a protest in downtown D.C. on Monday afternoon. That oppression, intimidation and manipulation has transitioned from Donald Trump inciting the attack on the U.S. Capitol building, and everyone inside, on January 6, 2021, to a full authoritarian takeover of D.C. – a city led by Democrats and people of color. And a city with a 30 year low in violent crime, according to the Department of Justice. Naturally, Trump ignored that fact when he made the unprecedented decision to invoke the D.C. Home Rule Act to federalize the DC police, dispatch at least 120 FBI agents, and activate 800 national guardsmen on orders to occupy D.C. from August 11 - September 25, according to notifications reported by NBC News. Any implementation of the D.C. Home Rule Act beyond 30 days will require authorization by Congress, and that’s where you come in. The Free D.C. Project is calling on people across the nation to contact their members of Congress and demand that they stand with D.C. and block Trump’s takeover. Trump stated that he is considering taking similar action in other cities led by Democratic officials, including Baltimore, New York, Oakland, and Chicago. Plus he already deployed the California National Guard in Los Angeles in June, and on August 11, 2025, he directed the Secretary of Defense to coordinate with governors and “authorize the orders of any additional members of the National Guard to active service, as he deems necessary and appropriate...” Now is the time to protest, because Trump is not going to stop.
